I often hear people saying that it's just not that pretty outside this time of year, not great for photos, let's wait until spring. It seems a shame to me, as winter is one of my favourite times of the year to shoot in. Here's 10 reasons to take your Family Portrait Session in Winter... 1. The Glorious Colours Ooooh the colours. They are utterly beautiful - it's the one time of the year when, in the absence of green foliage, nature is full of rich, chocolatey hues. As an added bonus, there's no tricky colour casts from surrounding greens, resulting in wonderful, natural skin tones that don't require extensive fixing in post-processing. 2. The Quality of Light With the winter sun low in the sky during the entire day, this makes for gorgeous, soft, even light all the way from dawn 'till dusk. This is a lot different to the warmer months when we are only able to shoot sessions during the golden hour, and gives us a lot more flexibility as to the time of day that we take your session. 3. Wrapping up warm I just love the look of scarves, hats, coats & boots, and little ones' look adorable in their winter clothes! 4. It's Adventurous & Unique Outdoor sessions always have a uniqueness to them any time of year, but with many others waiting for spring, summer & autumn, your winter portraits will have an entirely different look all of their own. I find that many of my winter clients have a real love of the great outdoors, and adventurous spirits. 5. There's less people about With so many people choosing to stay home, there's much more quiet, empty space in the countryside in winter than in the warmer months. 6. It's often not as cold as you might imagine. For numerous winter sessions I find myself taking off my coat because I'm too hot. Children are naturally very good at keeping warm because they are so active and don't seem to feel the cold as much as us grownups. Lots of stylish layers and winter accessories is suitable for most sessions in the cooler months. If you're prone to cold hands like me, just pop a couple of hand warmers in your pockets. 7. But when it does get really cold, there's frost & snow! Even just a little snow on the ground looks magical, and of course, if there's no falling snow at the time of our session, it can always be added in post processing. 8. It's invigorating. Fresh, cool air, maybe a bit of atmospheric mist about, just perfect for an energising family trip to the woods. 9. There's no Mosquitos If bugs find you tasty you'll know this is a winner! And last but not least... 10. Dogs Look Super Cute with Snowy Noses!
